Since 2000, Ecoventura has become a recognized leader in sustainable tourism in the Galapagos Islands and was the first company to earn and maintain the voluntary certification, SmartVoyager. This ensures our operation complies with a set of strict environmental policies and social responsibility including producing our own water, waste management, using four stroke engines to providing good living conditions and benefits to our crews. Ecoventura was the first company in Galapagos to offset carbon emissions from the company’s four yachts and sales offices. We also reduced emissions by 10% through the use of high performance filters and installation of solar panels and wind generators on the ERIC, converting her to the first hybrid yacht in Galapagos.
In 2006, Ecoventura established the Galapagos Marine Biodiversity Fund, in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund to help fund projects that target environmental education and marine conservation by strengthening the local communities’ ability to manage natural resources; such as scholarships for local students to form conservation leaders and control of illegal fishing activities. In an effort to give back to the town of San Cristobal, Ecoventura has pledged to sponsor the salaries for teachers and physical therapists who work at the Alejandro Alvear School for children with physical disabilities and adults who are hearing impaired and recently teamed up with Pack for a Purpose to assist passengers who want to bring needed supplies to the school.
The Origin is built with environmentally zero-emission materials and all equipment including engines and generators are to the highest specification. The vessel was designed with regards to fuel saving efficiency from the shape of the curved shape of the bow to cut through waves to the type of steel and welding technique used in construction.
In 2008, Ecoventura was presented with the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism – Best in a Marine Environment award during World Travel Market in London. Distinguished judges noted that Ecoventura contributes toward improving conditions for local people in Galapagos and was among the first operators to be independently audited. In 2009, Ecoventura was presented with the Conde Nast World Saver Award as the top scoring cruise line and was also a recipient of Travel + Leisure’s 5th annual Global Vision Award for Green Cruising. In 2010, Ecoventura’s President, Santiago Dunn was recognized by the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) as a finalist in the Innovation Award.
