An Introduction

A rather unknown and unspoiled destination, the Republic of Suriname is situated on the North-East coast of South-America. Suriname lies between Guyana and French Guyana and is bordered by Brazil in the south. Together, the three Guyana’s form the Guyana Shield, a solid geographical structure formed during an ancient volcanic eruption. The country measures less than 70% the size of the UK and is inhabited by half a million. A former colony of the Netherlands, the historic bond stills shows of in every aspect of daily life. The official language is Dutch, and many Surinamese living in the Diaspora in the Netherlands often return to visit their families and friends. The Capital Paramaribo, forms the center of all economic and cultural activities. Part of its wooden inner city, is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Suriname is home to a variety of ethnic groups and beautiful flora and fauna. Descendants from run-away slaves and immigrants from all over the world, form today’s unique, rich culture. Old traditions and cultural events are still very well preserved and form one of the main tourist attractions. Surinamese invite one with pride to take a look into their own world of heritage.

It is possible to experience the pristine Amazon rainforest by 4WD, dugout canoe and/or small airplane. One can meet with local Indigenous and Marroon communities and get a glimpse of traditional village life in the interior. They will be stunned by the knowledge of medicinal use of plants by the local healers. By visiting protected areas and the surrounding villages, one also contributes to nature protection.

The whole year through many international cultural and sports events are being held. However, Suriname is increasingly becoming international well-known for its end-of-the-year street parties. Fireworks rallies, with lots of music, swinging people and good food mark many events taking place all over the country. Annually, more international travelers come to experience this for themselves.
